Social Skills Workshops
Next Session Available Term 3 - 2018
This five session workshop, held fortnightly over a school term, will support your child to develop strategies to be successful in their social interactions. Often social skills are challenging for a child to generalise in the real world – give your child a chance to practice with the support of an Occupational Therapist and Speech Pathologist. They will also be able to use the format to practice with other children. This will not only give them a better chance at generalising the skills, but also build confidence and self-esteem needed for other social based settings.
Sessions will cover basics such as:
Nonverbal body language (such as eye contact, personal space, recognising simple and complex emotions)
Social pragmatics (such as how do I ask another child to play, what do I say if or when a child says no, how do I know if I am interrupting)
How to deal and manage teasing and bullying (and how do I recognise this).
Play skills (such as turn-taking, sharing and being a good sport)
Assertiveness (what’s the difference between being passive, assertive and aggressive).
Voice and tone (am I talking too fast, do I recognise different tones).
Listening skills needed to be a good friend
Ongoing social topics can be covered upon negotiation with parents and/or teachers and depending on child’s needs. Children will attend sessions with those of similar ages, interests or ability levels.
Discuss with your child’s therapist today to ensure enrolment in the most appropriate group.
